Throughout the school year, students from across the KFL&A area are screened to identify children who might need treatment or evaluation by a dentist because of an oral health problem. When children are identified as having a treatment need but face financial issues in accessing dental treatment services, the Children in Need of Treatment Program provides financial assistance to eligible children.

KFL&A Public Health established the Dental Treatment Assistance Fund, a charitable resource, to assist KFL&A residents over the age of 18 who are in need of emergency dental treatment but don’t have the financial means to pay for it. The program is funded by local dentists, community agencies, and proceeds from the Sports Mouthguard Program.

KFL&A Public Health’s dental program regularly promotes oral health through media campaigns and area elementary schools.

During the school year, a registered dental hygienist and certified dental assistant visit selected grades in elementary schools to screen for dental disease and to identify dental problems requiring treatment or evaluation by a dentist. Parents are contacted if their child has a dental problem that requires immediate attention. Funding is provided for eligible children under the Children in Need of Treatment program.

This program, for kids 17 and under, provides dental services to those who do not have access to any form of dental coverage. If eligible, kids will get regular dental services at no cost to their families. Healthy Smiles Ontario covers regular visits to a dentist or dental hygienist. It covers a full range of preventive and early treatment dental services including check-ups, cleaning, fillings, and x-rays. To be eligible, kids 17 and younger must be residents of Ontario, members of a household with an Adjusted Family Net Income of $20,000 per year or below, and do not have access to any form of dental coverage (including other government-funded programs, like Ontario Works). Families must submit application form to apply (available at KFL&A Public Health, or download a copy from the link below). Healthy Smiles Ontario Application Form

My kids’ Healthy Smiles Ontario cards will expire soon. What do I need to do?

If your kids have green cards, you need to fill out an Annual Eligibility Verification Declaration form (available at KFL&A Public Health, or download a copy from the link below). Submit the completed form along with your kid’s Client Cards to KFL&A Public Health, and we will issue your kids their new Client Cards.

If your kids have blue cards that say “One-Year Program Eligibility”, you will need to reapply to the Healthy Smiles Ontario program by completing the full application (see above Healthy Smiles Ontario Application Form link).

For $55, KFL&A Public Health manufactures custom mouthguards for athletes. The proceeds go to the Dental Treatment Assistance Fund to assist people who are in financial need of emergency dental services.
