Health Core Competencies: A Discussion Paper
The PHRED program of Ontario was commissioned by the Public Health Agency of Canada to develop a paper to illustrate 62 draft public health core competencies proposed for application in Canada. Core competencies are the set of crosscutting skills, knowledge and abilities necessary for the broad practice of public health. Key to the notion of core competencies is that they transcend the boundaries of the specific disciplines within public health and reflect the common knowledge, skills and abilities of all professionals working within the field of public health.
Public Health Nutrition Workforce Development
In 2006, the Pan Canadian Task Force on Public Health Nutrition Practice was formed in collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to provide strategic guidance and expert advice on public health nutrition practice enhancement in Canada. This initial work includes a literature review of competency development for public health nutrition professionals and an environmental scan, including key informant interviews, that summarizes current issues, gaps and opportunities in the public health nutrition field in Canada.
